‘SPIRIT’ features the Manhattan skyline. Above Manhattan, the American flag flies across the sky. Behind the flag, clouds of smoke are edged with white gold which is forming the shapes of different countries - a fractured Mercator’s projection of the world. The Twin Towers are gone and are now only an image rippling on the flag. Beside this surreal scene are three firefighters. They stand united in their determination. The gilded letters FDNY reflect on the wave crests of the river Hudson.

Ideas fascinate me and the ideas I see so vividly in my mind I try to recreate in wood. I spent part of my working life as managing director of a creative consultancy in London’s Covent Garden so my approach to wood carving is strongly influenced by contemporary graphic design, art deco and my great love, the Italian Renaissance, but above all by ideas.
